This is an amazing video featuring the Panini Perspective showing an impossible 170×85 degrees view!

The video was shot using the Sony NEX-5N and the Samyang 7.5mm Fisheye and reprojected with Panini-Video Alpha 0 to show a very natural and extremely wide field of view which is impossible to capture with any “normal” lens.

The High Line is a unique urban redevelopment of an unused elevated railroad line from the 1930s. It is a dynamic expression of one of the best public-private utilizations of unused industrial space and its interaction with the surrounding urban environment. Join me as we follow the high Line as it meanders through 3 distinct neighborhoods.

The High Line currently is open from Gansevoort Street to 30th Street on the west side of Manhattan.

On the 14th we will meet in the lobby of the Hotel at 7:00AM and walk approximately 10 minutes to the 30th Street entrance. We will return via taxi or public transportation* to the Hotel.

On the 15th we will do the reverse trip and start at Gansevoort Street and walk towards 30th Street.

Ulas Aksan - The Future of PanoramicVR Systems

360 degrees panoramic virtual reality systems are now used in every aspect of business and life. Once limited to artistic photgraphy, and then expanded to virtual tour systems, panoramic reality systems are now helping manufacturing of new products through various applications in GIS and engineering. As the founder of Panoramicweb and Pano-X virtual reality systems, Ulas Aksan will be giving a presentation on virtual reality and automation systems.

First part of his talk is about the Panoramic bot Pano-X and how it makes Virtual Tours simplified.

Second part of his talk is about GIS and Point Cloud integration to Panoramic VR systems.

Third part of his talk is about using VR Glasses with Panoramic VR tours.

Ulas Aksan was born in 1977 and comes from Ankara, TURKEY.

 

 

• In 1998 he started to the Conservatory’s music department, in 2002, he was honored with a mention at Yıldız Technical University International Guitar Days in the classical guitar composition branch.
• He started professional photography in 2006. One year after, he created his first works on the panoramic photography.
• In 2009, his work for ANKAmall shopping center was mentioned in about thirty newspaper. The work was the largest virtual tour for an indoor environment up to that date. In the same year he has started a collaboration with “360 cities” to create a joint project, but the collaboration was suspended due to financial crisis in Turkey and worldwide.
• In 2010, he and his brother Hasan Çağdaş Aksan started a work for automation of panoramic virtual tours in 2010, and as a starter they worked for a private company in Malaysia and they created a GIS integrated aerial panoramic virtual tour system.
• In 2011, they were funded by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology to work on a panoramic imaging robot named as Pano-X and they have launched a company named as Panoks with five other corporates. Afterwards Panoramic imaging system was supported with two new products which are compatible with car and helicopter. With the help of these two new products, especially with the help of aerial images, they could produce remarkable work which can be distinguished from Google streetview.
• In 2012, they have created a system for Vuzix virtual glasses to make a panoramic virtual tour with this glasses. The system was presented at the EMITT expo as the world’s first panoramic virtual tour which can be made by a virtual glasses. Currently the company carries out research and development activities. Additionally, to create a new product, he and his brother founded a new company named as Robopoint.

Akila Ninomiya - Japan - Pano-Journalism 2011/2012

On March 11th, 2011 a massive earthquake hit Eastern Japan along the pacific coast (The Great East Japan Earthquake). Just after this incident, various international mass media contacted me to take panos at disaster area, Tohoku.
However, Tohoku is really far from where I live, Kyoto, I refused all shooting offer because of their requirement of promptness.

Then, Mr. Jeffrey S. Martin who is a founder of 360cities, asked me to shoot many panos to keep it as an “archive”. Moreover, Mr. Bill Bailey (CEO of NodalNinja) supported my activity personally. Thanks to those offers, I could have been at Iwate Prefecture from 22th to 28th on March, less than 2 weeks after “3.11″. I took 116 panoramas on 5days (from 23th to 27th on March), released at Jeff special website on April 1st.
The site was named as‚ japan.pano-journalism.com/, and has been accessed not only from Japan, but also from many other countries.

One year after …

If I would take panos at same date, same time and same place as last year panos, it would be helpful to compare “what has changed” and “what has not changed” at disaster area. I thought it would make last year contents more meaningful.

I collected my activity fund 300,000 yen (about US$4,000) through Japanese micro-fund site CAMPFIRE for 3 weeks. I used this money for my transportation and accommodation costs. Last year I only stayed at Iwate Prefecture for a week, but this time I wanted to stay at Miyagi and Fukushima Prefecture also to take cross sectional archive photo, taking more time. So I have been there for two weeks from March 18th to 30th, taken just 300 panos. These are updated on my account at 360cities.

This year, I have a plan to make iPad application. I am considering that I will ask some developers living in Tohoku to make this application. The iOS PanoramaVR player API(based on Objective-C/OpenGL) can be created as open source. I think it will make Tohoku being center of developing PanoramaVR application in the world, and that will be a big help and support for Tohoku.

Born 1975 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Currently living in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

 

• Ryan Whitehead grew up in Saskatoon Saskatchewan Canada and went on to study recording engineering at The Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences.
• After graduation, took up work in the film/TV industry in Vancouver. This gave birth to a small production company, NorthStudio 360. The first 360video campaigns were The Nimmo Bay Experience and the journalistic 360video coverage of the Vancouver riots. Soon, Ryan joined forces with the creators of 360 Video.
• Immersive Media are the creators of the first 360 video camera and Google Street View. Ryan is currently working hard for Immersive Media traveling the globe on behalf of some the world’s largest brands.

Willy Kaemena - Aerial Panoramas without flying

Willy Kaemena will show us how to make aerial panoramas without taking our feet off the ground.
He will show a wide selection of these pseudo aerial panoramas which he shot all over the world and will explain how to make them and what to observe when shooting and processing them. After this lesson you should not be anymore too much scared of nodal points and panoheads and you might find yourself new opportunities.

• Willy Kaemena is an retired mechanical engineer who worked over 30 years in many countries of the world.
• His private passion are panoramas and he did first panoramas already 1965 with black and white photos which he glued together.
• Fueled by the development of QTVR he bought his first digital camera in 1997 and the first digital photos were immediately put together and an interactive QTVR was created.
• The next level was the “miracle” of full spheric panoramas, introduced with the development of Quicktime 5 in 2000.
• It took him 3 years to unveil this miracle and to produce his first sphericals of doubtful quality using a tiny Olympus Fisheye strapped on an Olympus 2.1 Mpix point and shoot digital cam.
• With the appearance of stitching software with a GUI and the availability of affordable digital SRLs and 8mm fisheye lenses, back in 2004, he could finally reached an output quality which still can be used today. In the last 10 years of his professional career he used interactive panoramas extensively on his job in order to transmit a real impression on the progress of his oversea projects back to the head office of his company.
• He was one of the early photographer of 360cities, the largest panorama website of the world, where he published already more than 1500 panoramas, shot in many countries of the world.
• He is well known by his special passion, which is traveling by train and documenting the interiors of famous trains as 360 panoramas and virtual tours.
• Currently he acts as secretary of the IVRPA

Matthias Taugwalder - The Panoramic Experience - Think Big and Outside the Screen

Panoramic photography is about capturing the immersive experience of a specific location at a specific time. When we as photographers are capturing a location, our view is not limited. We are shooting in 360 degrees! But why are we limiting ourselves to small prints and displays to show our work?

Panoramas can not only be shown as art prints, in books; or as interactive VR panoramas on websites and tablet/mobile devices. To deliver the original experience of a scene to the viewer we need new display techniques.

Apart from such immersive displays, panoramic and gigapixel photography can sometimes even be used for non-standard applications – as for example group portraits. But these special projects also need special preparations.

Matthias Taugwalder will show based on several projects how panoramas can be displayed to deliver this unique immersive experience and how one can use software tools for the advance planning of such unusal projects.
